SECOND DAY OF POLLING UNDERWAY IN TAILEVU NORTH

(May 9th, 2006 No. 70)

Good voter turnout was recorded this morning in Vunibokoi District School in Verata, Tailevu with about 150 voters casting their votes before 12 noon.

Presiding officer for the polling station, Beranado Mow said that the members of that constituency were fully aware of their polling day and turned up in numbers from the opening of the station.

“It has been a great turnout from the morning as soon as we opened and they know fully well the procedure needed in order to make their vote count,” said Mr Mow.

For Dawasamu, the voter turnout trickled in slowly with most voters having to make their way from remote areas.

Presiding officer for the Dawasamu Polling Station, Marika Balawakula said that the voters had been coming in slowly with more expected to turn up at the polling station later in the afternoon.

“But they all know by now that today is the day that has been designated for them to cast their votes and we are confident that there will be a good turnout by the evening,” said Mr Balawakula.

Villages such as Luvunavuaka, Nabualau, Driti, Delakado, Veikura and Vorovoro are all included in the Tailevu/Fijian Open with a number of Indians voting in the Viti Levu East/Maritime Indian constituency.

Polling today for the Tailevu North areas have been scattered right up to Nayavu in Wainibuka and Qoma Island.

Polling stations closed at 5pm today.
