ROBIN IRWIN WINS NORTH EAST GENERAL COMMUNAL SEAT

The North East General communal constituency (No. 25) has been won by independent candidate Robin Irwin.

Mr Irwin won the seat at the fifth preference with 2014 while David Christopher of the SDL party stood at 1,639. Mr Christopher won this seat during the 2001 general election.

At the fourth count, Harry A. Robinson of the United People’s Party (UPP), was left out with 941 votes, leaving Mr Christopher with 1,639 and Mr Irwin on trail with 1165. Mr Robinson had given his 4th preference to Mr Irwin.

Other candidates, Nawaia Touakin an independent was left out at the second count with 367 votes, Rebo Terubea of the Fiji Labour party was left at the third count with 423 votes and Rocky Billings of the National Alliance party at the first count scored only 289 votes.

The total number of ballot papers counted was 4,042 and the number of invalid papers was 389 leaving the number of valid papers at 3,653. The number of voters required for majority (50% + 1) was 1,828.
